Is Battery Smoke Harmful. You should try and find that before you consider replacing the battery. If you are exposed to this acid it can make your nose feel irritated and you can smell a pungent odor.
They can develop an internal short but I suspect it was not. Use a bonafide voltmeter to measure these voltages. The 100 LEL concentration for hydrogen is 40 by volume.

At this concentration all it takes is a source of ignition to cause an explosion. However it could have done some other damage. Vaporization produces the purest. Dont ever pull the vent holes in the positive end of the battery up close to your face or nose like I very stupidly did.
